Malahat Connector / Sooke Wilderness Trail
Start location: Swartz Bay
Ride Type: One Way
Date Ridden: July 2022 and July 2023
Distance: 106 km (Swartz Bay to Duncan)
Elevation: 1,526 m
Surface: Mostly gravel (Langford to Duncan sector) or mix road/gravel (from Swartz Bay)
Why do this ride: Malahat Connector section of Vancouver Island trail/Cowichan Valley Trail, Sooke Wilderness Trail, Kinsol trestle.
Difficulty: A fair amount of up and down and some twists and turns but not overly difficult. The Sooke Wilderness section of trail is easier south to north (climbing on double track) starting in Langford than north to south (climbing on twisty single track) ending in Langford.
Other notes: There are many variations to this route. This long version from Swartz Bay to Duncan could possibly done as a day trip from the Lower Mainland returning by evening ferry connecting via Salt Spring. The route from ferry to Langford start, while paved is quite scenic. Other connections via Galloping Goose or shorter versions are also possible.
